The complex is located in the village Plaosan Bugisan, District Prambanan, Klaten regency, Central Java Province. If the distance towards Plaosan of Prambanan is approximately 1.5 kilometers to the east.

History Plaosan

Some historians argue that the strong suspicion regarding the construction of Plaosan this year is at about the 9th century, precisely built by Queen Sri Kahulunan during the reign of King Rakai Pikatan of the kingdom of Mataram Hindu or ancient Mataram.

According Cri Kalununan inscription which dates to the year 842 AD, mentioned that the temple was built by Queen Lor Sri Kahulunan supported by her husband. According to De Casparis a historian, Sri Kahulunan is owned by Pramodhawardani title. She was the daughter of King Samarattungga derived from Buddhist Sailendra dynasty. Pramodhawardani then married to a descendant of the Hindu Sanjaya dynasty namely Rakai Pikatan.

Architecture Plaosan

In general, the complex area Plaosan there are two temple complexes are Plaosan Lor (Plaosan North) and Plaosan Kidul (Plaosan South). And one interesting thing here is that there is relief in this temple is very detail and smooth. Models such as the subtle relief can also be found in the relief Borobudur, Sewu, and Candi Sari.

World's largest temple building in the complex is located on Plaosan Lor. Will be found in the courtyard of the leading 2 pairs of large Dwarapala statue facing each other, that is at the entrance to the north and south of each pair. In the courtyard to the north, can be found a square terrace made of rock. At the top of the porch is believed to become a building of wood, and was destroyed. And on the porch there was once believed Dhyani Buddha statue.

The main building Lor Temple complex consists of 2 large twin temples 2 levels. One temple in the north, and another in the south. The two temples facing west. The temple is on the north side is often called the Women temple decorated with many reliefs for women, while on the south side of the temple called the Temple of Man because many decorated with men.

On the outside of the main temple there are 116 pieces of small stupas surrounding it. There are also 58 pieces of ancillary temples. Both main temple buildings each have two levels which formerly separated by wood between levels. Downstairs and upstairs each have 3 small rooms. While in the middle of the room there are several statues temple Dhyani Bodhisattva of which half was missing.

Plaosan temple complex is in stark contrast with Plaosan Lor. Plaosan temple layout is on the south side Plaosan Lor, and a separate position somewhat away by highway. But unfortunately this complex shape is just a retuntuhan and debris alone. Temple complex Plaosan there are only a few perwara or small temples.

Cultural mixing Hindu - Buddha in Plaosan

Although Plaosan is a Buddhist temple, but obviously the architecture of the building and its reliefs is a mixture of the two styles of Buddhist and Hindu. This happens because the construction period at the start of the collapse of the Buddhist Sailendra dynasty in Java, and started the rise of the religious Hindu Sanjaya dynasty.

Besides other factors allegedly due to both cultural mixing that occurs when Pramodhawardani Buddhist Rakai Pikatan married to a Hindu. And their marriage marked the start of the mixing of cultures which also makes Plaosan more unique and exotic.
